Eye Strain
Understanding and preventing digital eye strain is more important than ever.
With more time spent on computers, smartphones, and tablets, digital eye strain — also known as computer vision syndrome — has become one of the most common eye complaints. Symptoms include headaches, blurred vision, dry eyes, and neck and shoulder pain.
The 20-20-20 Rule. Every 20 minutes, take a 20-second break and look at something 20 feet away. This simple habit gives your eye muscles a chance to relax and refocus.
Screen Position. Your computer screen should be about an arm's length away and positioned so the top of the screen is at or slightly below eye level. This reduces strain on both your eyes and neck.
Reduce Glare. Adjust your screen brightness to match your surroundings and consider an anti-glare screen protector. Overhead lighting and windows can create reflections that force your eyes to work harder.
Blink More. We blink about 66% less when staring at screens, leading to dry, irritated eyes. Make a conscious effort to blink regularly, and keep artificial tears nearby if needed.
If you experience persistent symptoms, visit Dumont Eye Care for a comprehensive evaluation. Dr. Sunga can prescribe specialized computer glasses or recommend other treatments to keep your eyes comfortable.
